"Confidence is key"

There are 4 general phases each reader goes through before fluency.

Reading Phases

Phase 1 "The Pre Reader"

During the initial phase of the reading development process we sample and learn from a full range of multiple sounds, words, concepts, images, and stories.

Phase 2 "The Beginner"

During the second phase of the reading development process we are learning the relationships between letters and sounds and amongst printed and spoken words. We begin to read stories and “sound out” new one-syllable words.

Phase 3 "The Decoding/Blending Reader"

During the third phase of the reading development, process we are beginning to read familiar stories and text with increasing fluency. This includes familiar vocabulary, and ideas.

Phase 4 "The Fluent Reader"

During the fourth phase of the reading development process, reading is used to gain new knowledge, including new vocabulary, and new ideas.
